2 Question 1 Carefully read the text below, consisting of 12 lines, about ‘Hallyu’ or the Korean wave. The first and last lines are correct. For eight of the lines, there is one grammatical error in each line. There are two more lines with no errors. If there is NO error in a line, put a (  ) in the space provided. If the line is incorrect, circle the incorrect word and write the correct word in the space provided. The correct word you provide must not change the original meaning of the sentence. Examples: I arrived to my destination at 2 p.m. ………at………… My mother always wears sensible clothes. ………………… They call it ‘Hallyu’, the Korean wave: the idea that South Korean pop culture has grown in prominence to became a major driver of global culture. At the 1 heart of ‘Hallyu’ is the ever-growing popular of K-pop — short for Korean pop 2 music. K-pop has take on a whole new kind of sociopolitical significance, as 3 South Korea proudly display its best-known export before the world. During 4 the Olympic opening ceremony in 2018, athletes march in the Parade of 5 Nations to the accompaniment of a group of K-pop hits, each contributing to 6 the image South Korea wants to present now: one of a country that is a full 7 integrated part of the global culture. Although, prominently missing from the 8 live performance list at the Olympics was the more popular K-pop band in the 9 world at the moment: BTS. Today, if it is possible to ascribe a tipping point 10 to a “wave” that seems to be endless, BTS might be it.

Question 2 The town centre in your neighbourhood is run down. The town council is working on a project to enhance the area for the benefit of the residents whose profile is becoming older, with more working adults and senior citizens. There are three shortlisted ideas. The town council is seeking feedback about the ideas from the people in the area, including students. Your school’s Student Council has been invited to share their views. As the President of the Student Council, you have been asked to represent the student body in delivering a speech to the town council’s project team. In your speech to the project team, you should: • state which idea the school supports • explain how the idea chosen benefits both working adults and senior citizens • what other groups of people in the community stand to gain from the idea you recommend • why the selected idea is preferred over the other ideas Write your speech to the town council project team in clear, accurate English and in a polite and persuasive tone to promote the idea the school has selected. You may add any other details that might be of interest. You should use your own words as much as possible.
