The tower was constructed in 1173 as part of a project to flaunt a military victories of Pisa. Due to its unstable foundation, the tower leans four degrees south and is slightly curve as a result of attempts to keep it from toppli ng o ff. Many ideas have been suggested to straighten the tower, including taking it apart stone by stone and rebuild it at a different location. In 2001, the stabilisation work of removing small volumes of soil from the foundation were successfully completed. At least four strong earthquakes have hit the region since the year 1280, or the tower has not collapse. At present, the tower is a popular tourist destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
