The government official made this speech to convince the immigrants at the ceremony that immigrants play an important role in maintaining harmony in Singapore. This is evident in “The peace and harmony that w e enjoy today did not come about by sheer chance, and we cannot take it for granted”. This means that everyone has to contribute to building a cohesive and harmonious society in Singapore as it is important for the progress of the country. The governmen t official made this speech as there has been unhappiness as Singaporeans feel that the new immigrants do not integrate themselves sufficiently. Hence, this speech was made to convince the immigrants so that they will take the initiative to integrate themselves so as to maintain harmony in Singapore. 5 1(b ) Study Sources B and C. [7]

Source B states that the new immigrants took the initiative to volunteer and get to learn and interact with others while Source C states that new citizens s tarted initiating conversations with their neighbours and broke the ice. This is evident in B which states “being a volunteer helped me to integrate better and get to know others better” and in C which states “A smile, a few words and before I knew it, the same people who made snide remarks were saying hey these new folks are ok really”. Hence, this is expected and I am not surprised. 6 1(d) Study Sources E and F. Which of these two sources is more useful as evidence about new immigrants in Singapore? Explain your answer. Source E is useful as it suggests that some immigrants are putting in effort to integrate into Singapore’s society. He has presented a subjective perspective, one that is very critical of the curry incident and the foreign immigrants. As he is a popular podcaster, he wants to criticize the immigrant family and convince the Singaporeans that foreign immigrants are not making an effort to integrate into Singapore’s society so that they can pressure the government to review the foreign 6

4 immigration policy. As he has a hidden agenda, Source F is less reliable and less useful than Source F. He has provided a balanced perspective, stating that foreigners are not putting in effort to integrate into society and locals are not welcoming of foreigners and are not helping them integrate into society. He wants to convince both parties to put in more effort so that the immigrants can seamles sly integrate into society and both parties can learn more about each other.
