The government official made this speech to convince the immigrants at the ceremony that immigrants play an important role in maintaining harmony in Singapore. This is evident in “The peace and harmony that w e enjoy today did not come about by sheer chance, and we cannot take it for granted”. This means that everyone has to contribute to building a cohesive and harmonious society in Singapore as it is important for the progress of the country. The governmen t official made this speech as there has been unhappiness as Singaporeans feel that the new immigrants do not integrate themselves sufficiently. Hence, this speech was made to convince the immigrants so that they will take the initiative to integrate themselves so as to maintain harmony in Singapore. 5 1(b ) Study Sources B and C. [7]

This is evident in B which states that Mdm Angie “has been actively involved in the community” and that she “exp lains policies such as Medishield Life and the Silver Support Scheme to seniors”. This is also evident in C which states that “two of these new immigrants have joined the group and families have met, chit chatted and have turned from cohabitors to friends”. This means that in both sources, the immigrants have successfully adapted to life in Singapore. OR E.g. Both source are different in stating how the new immigrants have been integrated into society. Source B states that the new immigrants took the initiative to volunteer and get to learn and interact with others while Source C states that new citizens s tarted initiating conversations with their neighbours and broke the ice. This is evident in B which states “being a volunteer helped me to integrate better and get to know others better” and in C which states “
