3 Did China’s involvement extend the war? BACKGROUND INFORMATION Read this carefully. It may help you answer some of the questions. The Korean War was fought between the North and South Korea from 1950 to 1953. It began when North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union, invaded South Korea. The war saw rapid shifts in momentum as North Korean forces swiftly captured Seoul in June 1950. However, a successful United Nations (UN) counteroffensive, led by the United States (US), at Inchon in September 1950, turned the tide, leading to the recapture of Seoul and a push northward.
