Technique (not in SH1 Promotionals) Steps of a CBQ State the 4 things one can analyse about a theme State the prose mnemonic Question/Context Analysis General Question Format: Write a critical commentary on the following passage, relating it to the presentation of (theme/character)/the use of (technique) here and elsewhere in the novel 1. Find the crux of the passage 2. Draw associations from the crux to the question’s a. Nature: Characteristics and essential qualities i. Consider relationship between different elements b. Role/Function: In terms of Plot, Theme and Character development c. Process d. Outcome: Consider 5W1H 3. Identify Narrative Techniques: Literary Techniques a. Link via effect and significance (thematic) 4. Identify Concerns and Value Judgements ● IMPT: Keep in mind how your points can be strengthened with the context of the passage Example: Significance of First Impressions ● Whose? ● Of whom? ● Why?
Forming a Thesis Overview of main points explaining how theme/character/literary technique is used ● Example: Austen uses first impressions and appraisals for three important purposes; as a manner to examine the suitability of society’s standards of judgement, to show the fallibility of human judgement, and to show the psychological growth of her protagonist How should context and text be used together? Choosing Evidence Attitude: Consider the theme in the context of the extract ● How far does the extract and your quotes represent the novel as a whole? ● Significance of the extract in the novel ○ Character/Theme/Technique: Defining/Important Moment? Turning Point? ■ E.g. Opening chapter’s effect on development/Last chapter ties up the story Choice: Passage as primary source + References to other chapters ● Context adds on to analysis through cross-references ● Show how narrative technique + plot development + characteristics → Final Product ● Methods of linking context and text ○ Corroboration: ■ This is evident elsewhere in the novel where… ■ Similarly the use of technique x is evident in… ○ Foreshadowing How long should you spend on the essay/one paragraph Writing Conventions ● Time: 45 - 50 min ○ 15-20 min/paragraph State the 4 aspects of an introduction Introduction 1.
