2 Section A [10 marks] Question 1 Carefully read the text below, consisting of 12 lines, about the history of Starbucks. The first and the last lines are correct. For eight of the lines, there is one grammatical error in each line. There are two more lines with no errors. If there is NO error in a line, put a tick (✓) in the space provided. It was there which Starbucks opened its first store, offering fresh-roasted coffee beans, tea and spices in around the world for their customers to take home. Their name was inspired by a classic tale, ‘Moby Dick’, evoking the seafaring tradition of the early coffee trader. Ten years later, a young New Yorker named Howard Schultz would walk through those doors but become captivated with Starbucks coffee from his first sip. After joining the company in 1982, a different cobblestone road would led him to another discovery. It was on a trip to Milan in 1983 that Howard first experienced Italy’s coffeehouses, and he returned to Seattle inspired to bring the warmth and artistic of its coffee culture to Starbucks. By 1987, Starbucks swapped their brown aprons for green ones and embark on their next chapter as a coffeehouse. You shared with your teacher, who is also the Head of Department for Citizenship and Character Education (CCE), about your volunteering experience. Your teacher has requested that you write an article for your school’s online newsletter to encourage your schoolmates to join a volunteer activity through SG Cares during the upcoming year-end holiday. Your article for the online newsletter must include the following: • a title to attract readers’ attention • which activity would be the most suitable for your schoolmates and why • what the proposed volunteering activity entails • how your schoolmates will benefit from their involvement. Write your article in clear, accurate English and in a lively, persuasive tone to encourage your schoolmates to participate in the volunteering activity.
