P5 At Liverpool the tide is nearly sinusoidal and has a period of 12 hours 40 minutes. On a day when the height of high tide above low tide is 7.4 m, determine (a) the length of time within a cycle during which the water is more than 5.0 metres above low tide. (A ship's captain must be aware of the depth of water his ship requires and he needs to be able to do this type of calculation from tide charts to ascertain that it is safe.) (b) The rate at which the tide is rising or falling when the water is 5.0 metres above low tide. P6 2013 P1 Q15 The graph shows how the sea level varies with time at Liverpool. The zero (equilibrium position) of the sea level axis is taken at the mid-tide level.
