8 2 Chemists sometimes use a quantity, 𝑝𝐾𝑎, to describe the strength of acids . A 𝑝𝐾𝑎 value of less than zero denotes a strong acid. During the titration of a weak acid with sodium hydroxide, the pH of the solution when half of the acid has been neutralised is equal to the 𝑝𝐾𝑎value of the acid. The 𝑝𝐾𝑎 value of the acid can be used to confirm the identity of the acid. The chemis t transferred 25.0 cm³ of acid Y into a beaker using a pipette and measured the pH using a pH meter that can be read to one decimal place. A solution of 0.100 mol/dm 3 sodium hydroxide was added from a burette in small portions. After each addition, the pH of the mixture was recorded. The results are shown in Table 2.1 below. Table 2.1
