LA (i) weather [1] (ii) precipitation/ rain(fall) X Weather / precipitation is misspelt [1] 6 What does ‘escapable’ (line 3) tell you about the writer’s state of mind? MA He was optimistic/ hopeful X positive (too general) X confident / assured (too strong) [1] 7 ‘the cave’s mood had darkened considerably’ (lines 3 - 4) a) What is the writer comparing the cave to? b) Explain what the writer means by this expression. LA MA a) A person / an angry person / human being X mood / emotions / feelings / a person who has emotions (suggests there are those who do not have emotions) a person who is able to experience emotions / an upset / grumpy person (too weak) b) The situation had become more threatening / hostile / dangerous (appropriate adjectives to reflect ‘darkened’) X worse (too generic) X more challenging [1] [1] 8 Paragraph 1 describes the dangers of moving through the flooded caves. Explain how the language used in this paragraph emphasises the different dangers. Support your answer with two details from Paragraph 1. For credit, students must 1) identify and present 2 distinct dangers (e.g. a/b/c + d) 2) comment on the effects of specific key word / words, reflecting the intensity 3) link explanation to quote X if quote includes details that aren’t unpacked / explained X if explanation uses the same key words in the quote / is too general or vague HA a) ‘the water inside them whirlpooled / frothed like the rapids of some ferocious river’ suggests that that one could be overcome by the great volume/force and speed of the waters OR
3 Anglican High School/Prelim/2026/Sec4/EL/Paper 2 b) ‘sucked underneath (and drowned)’ shows that the undercurrents might pull one forcefully into the water, causing suffocation / death OR ‘the entrance floor and some of the chambers beyond were now submerged to a considerable depth’ shows that the caves were flooded to the point that one could drown / had difficulty breathing c) ‘Anybody wading through the churn was at risk of being swept away’ suggests that one would not be able to withstand the force of the waters X if explanation merely represents the speed / volume / force e.g. the waters moved quickly MA d) ‘smashed against the rocks’ shows that one might be battered / hit violently against the rocks. *(need to show intensity) [2] 9 Explain in your own words why the writer felt ‘Psychologically it was tough going’ (line 8). HA MA There was a sense of foreboding / imminent danger / feeling that something bad is going to happen [1] X unsettling / uneasy / bad / eerie / evil / despair and he had to be vigilant /on the lookout / hyperaware [1] X careful / cautious / wary / aware / attentive / focused (nothing to do with concentration) From passage, an ominous feel to our situation and my senses were on high alert [2] 10 In Paragraph 2, the writer describes himself to be in a ‘playground’ (line 12). Why is this description unusual? MA HA A playground is normally associated with fun and enjoyment [1] X play / safety / lighthearted but the writer had to brave and overcome (dangerous) obstacles / on an important rescue mission. (full quote needed) X ‘I kept my mask on’ - does not address the question X if students merely repeated the key words from quote in explanation or included aspects in quote that aren’t addressed in explanation MA MA HA [3] 12 What did the writer mean by ‘I imagined the impossible was happening’ (line 19)? [1] X ED if students go on to include that the Wild Boars were alive 13 What is effective about comparing the rescue of the workers to ‘an underwater wrestling match’ (lines 30-31)? HA It highlights how both the rescuers and workers had to jostle each other / how the rescuers had to overcome the physical opposition of the workers to get them to move. Idea of fighting an opponent / opponent’s resistance needs to be clear in answers X: physically demanding / a lot of effort put in to … / it was difficult to bring the workers out (need to show the idea of ‘wrestling with an opponent’) X: difficulty of dragging thrashing workers to the surface (copying ‘thrashing’ from the RP without addressing the idea of ‘fighting a
