2260/02/PRELIMS/4EXP5N(A)/2026 [Turn over Suggested Answers 1 (a) Describe the goals of town planning in Singapore. 3 AO1 Award 1 mark for description of each goal of town planning to a maximum of 3 marks. Award 1 additional mark for further elaboration of the goal of town planning, up to a maximum of 1 additional mark. Accept other possible further elaborations. Possible responses include: • Town planning in Singapore serves the needs of residents at the distinct levels of precinct, neighbourhood and town. [1 mark] • By ensuring that there is land set aside for roads, schools, hospitals and parks and housing, it ensures that the needs of residents living there are met. [1 additional mark] • Town planning in Singapore also wants to try to provide for nature at the distinct levels of precinct, neighbourhood and town. [1 mark] • By setting aside areas of land as parks or nature reserves, Singapore aims to ensure that the needs of residents are met while also conserving and protecting nature. [1 additional mark] • Town planning in Singapore also aims to create connections and synergies across precincts, neighbourhoods and towns. [1 mark] • This is done to cater to the long-term needs at a national level where resources are optimised for the diverse needs of the country. [1 additional mark]
2260/02/PRELIMS/4EXP5N(A)/2026 [Turn over (b) Study Fig. 1.1 (Insert), which shows a view of Yishun Town Centre in Singapore. Fig. 1.1 2 AO2 Using Fig. 1. 1, explain two spatial associations that help ensure economic sustainability in Yishun. Award 1 mark for every spatial association linked to economic sustainability. Accept other possible spatial associations seen in Fig. 1.2. Accept other possible explanations that show economic sustainability. Possible answers include: • The Yishun MRT Station is located near Northpoint City. This ensures access from other parts of Singapore to Yishun, bringing in more population into Yishun to demand for goods and services. [1 mark] • The Yishun MRT Station is located near the bus interchange. This allows for fewer connecting infrastructure to be built, lowering the cost of transport and ensuring affordability. [1 mark] • The Northpoint shopping centre is built near the HDB flats so the high population density ensures that shops have enough demand to sustain themselves and residents can take up employment at the shops to earn income. [1 mark]
2260/02/PRELIMS/4EXP5N(A)/2026 [Turn over (c) (i) A group of students wanted to investigate the level of environmental stewardship among residents in Yishun, Singapore. They positioned themselves at the exit of Yishun Bus Interchange and interviewed 60 residents. They interviewed first 20 people from each of the 3 income groups (high, middle and low). Describe the advantages of the sampling process adopted by the students. 3 AO2 Award 1 mark for description of the advantages of quota sampling to a max of 3m. Award 1 additional mark for any elaboration of the advantage. Possible responses include: • The sampling method ensures that each income group is represented by having an equal number of respondents (20) from each group. [1 mark] • This allows the students to compare the level of environmental stewardship across different income groups more fairly and reliably. [1 additional mark] • It is faster to carry out because respondents selected the first 20 people from each income group, which is convenience sampling. [1 mark] • A large sample size of 60 respondents were surveyed, providing sufficient data to identify patterns and compare responses across the three income groups more reliably. [1 mark] (ii) Study Fig. 1.2, which shows the closed-ended questionnaire survey the students used. Fig. 1.2 3 AO3
2260/02/PRELIMS/4EXP5N(A)/2026 [Turn over With reference to Fig. 1.2, evaluate how suitable the questions are for investigating the level of environmental stewardship among residents in Yishun. Award 1 mark for evaluation of each question to a max of 3m. Award 1 additional mark for further elaboration of suitability of question, up to a maximum of 1 additional mark. Possible responses include: Suitable: • Question 2 is a suitable question as the options given will allow for representation from the different income groups which can hence meet investigation objectives. [1 mark] The higher income groups may be more engaged in volunteerism than the lower income groups. [1 additional mark] • Question 3 is suitable as it seeks to find out the respondents’ participation in activities to protect and conserve the environment / a direct indication of their level of environmental stewardship. [1 mark] • Question 2 and 3 are suitable as they are relevant to the investigation’s objectives of finding out about environmental stewardship. [1 mark] • The predefined response questions are suitable as they can gather quantitative data for analysis / comparisons on the level of stewardship. [1 mark] Not Suitable: • Question 1 is not a suitable question as collecting data on different age groups is irrelevant to the investigation objectives / not part of their sampling process. [1 mark] • The options in Question 2 may be too personal / sensitive / confidential to disclose, [1mark], resulting in inaccurate data if the respondent chooses not to answer or answer untruthfully. [1 mark] • The options in Question 2 may be too vague as it does not specify the income figures / ranges for each income group, which could result in inaccurate data being collected [1 mark], as respondents may categorise themselves into the wrong income group, making comparisons between income groups less reliable. [1 additional mark] • Question 3 is not suitable because the phrase "participate in activities" is too general and lacks specific details , resulting in a subjective interpretation of the phrases [1 mark] For example, respondents may be unsure whether such activities include recycling at home, volunteering for clean -up events, or simply attending environmental talks without taking action. [1 mark] • Question 4 is not suitable because it measures respondents' environmental concerns rather than their level of environmental stewardship , which is irrelevant to the investigation’s objectives. [1 mark] A respondent may be concerned about climate change, air pollution, water pollution or deforestation but may not take any actions to protect the environment. Therefore, the responses do not accurately reflect the respondents' level of environmental stewardship. [1 additional mark]
2260/02/PRELIMS/4EXP5N(A)/2026 [Turn over (d) A group of geography students wanted to investigate the popularity of local parks in Eastern Singapore.
