Write in dark blue or black pen. You may use an HB pencil for any diagrams, graphs, tables or rough working. Do not use staples, paper clips, glue or correction fluid. The use of an approved scientific calculator is expected, where appropriate. You may lose marks if you do not show your working or if you do not use appropriate units. Section A Answer all questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided on the question paper. Section B Answer one question. Write your answers in the spaces provided on the question paper. The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question. This question paper consists of 18 printed pages including this cover page. For Examiner’s Use Section A / 55 Section B / 10 Total / 65
DO NOT TURN OVER THIS PAPER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO. Section A Answer all questions. 1 Fig. 1.1 shows a steel sheet laid on the ground for temporary vehicle tracks on a muddy site. The density of the steel is 7800 kg/m 3 . Fig. 1.1 (a) Calculate the mass of one steel sheet. mass = ................................. kg [2] (b) (i) Calculate the pressure exerted on the ground by the steel sheet. pressure = ....................... N/m 2 [1] (ii) Explain why the use of the steel sheet can prevent vehicles from sinking into the muddy ground. ………………………………………………………………………………………... ………………………………………………………………………………………... ………………………………………………………………………………………... [2]
2 Fig. 2.1 shows a block is being pulled by a constant 10.0 N force on a rough surface. Fig. 2.1 During the experiment, the block travels at a constant speed of 2.0 m/s to the right. (a) On Fig. 2.1, draw and label an arrow to show the other horizontal force acting on the block. [1] (b) Hence or otherwise, explain why the block travels at a constant speed even though a constant force is applied on the block. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………… [2] (c) The same block is now pulled over a different rough surface. The frictional force acting on the block is 20.0 N. The force of friction, F, can be calculated using the relationship F = µN where µ = coefficient of friction, dependent on the roughness of the surface N = normal force. Given that the coefficient of friction of the rough surface is 0.5, determine the magnitude of the normal force N. normal force = …….………… N [1]
3 A cyclist cycles at a uniform speed of 13 m/s in a straight line for 40 s, and subsequently decelerates uniformly to rest in 20 s. (a) On Fig. 3.1, draw the speed-time graph of the cyclist. Fig. 3.1 [1] (b) Determine the cyclist’s deceleration in the last 20 s of his journey. deceleration = …………….. m/s 2 [1] (c) (i) Calculate the distance travelled by the cyclist in the first 40 s of his journey. distance = …………….……… m [1]
(ii) Calculate the distance travelled by the cyclist while he decelerates. distance = …………….……… m [1] (iii) Using your answers in (c)(i) and (c)(ii) , on Fig. 3.2, draw the distance–time graph for the whole journey. Fig. 3.2 [2]
4 Fig. 4.1 represents a man holding a 2.0 m fishing rod with a fish he caught. He pivots the rod at the other end of the rod using his left hand. He keeps the rod balanced horizontally by supporting it with an upwards force F at a position 0.5 m away from the pivot using his right hand. W 2.0 m pivot (left hand) F (right hand) 0.5 m Fig. 4.1 (a) The mass of the fish is 2.5 kg. The gravitational field strength, g is 10 N/kg . Calculate its weight W . weight W = ……………..……... N [1] (b) Calculate the force F applied by the man in order to keep the rod balanced horizontally.
force F = ……………………… N [2] (c) The man then shifts his right hand closer to his left hand. State how the upward force F which he applies changes. Explain your answer. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………… [2] 5 A barrel of mass 50 kg is stationary at the bottom of the smooth ramp, held on a rope. It is then pulled up onto the back of a lorry, along the ramp, using an electric motor as shown in Fig. 5.1. The gravitational field strength is 10 N/kg. Fig. 5.1 (a) Calculate the energy in gravitational potential store of the barrel when it is raised onto the lorry. energy = …………………….… J [1] (b) After the barrel is pulled and reaches the back of the lorry, it has a speed of 1.5 m/s. Calculate the gain in energy in kinetic store of the barrel. energy = …………………….… J [1] (c) Calculate the total work done by the force F , to pull the barrel onto the lorry.
work done = …………………... J [1] (d) Calculate the force F , required to pull the barrel onto the lorry. force F = ……………………… N [2] 6 Fig. 6.1 shows a ship which emits ultrasound waves to determine the depth of the sea. An ultrasound pulse of 4 MHz is emitted from
