2 Section A [10 marks] Question 1 Carefully read the text below, consisting of 12 lines about the culture of the West African nation of Senegal. The first and last lines are correct. For eight of the lines, there is one grammatical error in each line. There are two more lines with no errors. If there is NO error in a line, put a tick (√) in the space provided. lf the line is incorrect, circle the incorrect word and write the correct word in the space provided. The correct word you provide must not change the original meaning of the sentence. Examples: I arrived to my destination at 2 p.m. at My mother always wears sensible clothes. On my first day in Senegal, while I was waiting for a taxi, a woman draped in colourful fabric asked if she could use my phone. Hesitating with a perplexed 1 ….……….. smile, I wonder about the oddness of asking that of a stranger. While I 2 ….……….. wavered, a similar dressed person presented her phone to the woman 3 ….……….. without a second thought. Experiences like these continued throughout my 4 ….……….. travels in Senegal, and I quickly realised that they were no t bold request 5 ….……….. from strangers. They were my introduction of teraanga. Senegal is the “Land 6 ….……….. of Teraanga”. Travel guides written for the Western tourist often defines 7 ….……….. this wor d as meaning hospitality and for the Senegalese, this is a loose 8 ….……….. translate. For them, teraanga is a way of life. As a visitor, I quickly noticed 9 ….……….. that this value permeates many aspects of life in Senegal.
