3 What is the impact of FICA on Singapore? BACKGROUND INFORMATION Read this carefully. It may help you to answer some of the questions. The Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Act (also known as FICA) is a controversial law passed by Singapore’s parliament in October 2021. FICA contains measur es to prevent, detect and disrupt foreign interference and influence in domestic policies. This act would allow authorities to make internet service providers and social media platforms provide user information and block content that they deem hostile. Additionally, the law will allow authorities to label individuals involved in local political processes as “Politically Significant Persons” who can be subject to countermeasures to reduce the risk of foreign interference.
