The ‘murmuring of the water in the stream that ran at the bottom of the garden’ (a) tells us that the sound is low-pitched, indistinct, continuous / that the environment was so quiet that one could hear the sound of flowing steam (b), showing that the family house was surrounded by nature (c). A ‘whisper of tiny movement in the hedgerows and grasses’ (a) tells us that there were animals around (b), indicating that the countryside was so serene that one could hear animals (c). 6a. The phrase is ‘put on a show of amusement at her absent-mindedness.’ 6b. (i) Kasim walked away from her. (ii) Kasim did not say anything.
2 7(a) The writer lists amenities that were absent around the house to emphasise that it is in the middle of the nowhere as there were no other buildings around except houses. / uses repetition to emphasise there were no amenities around the house. Question 7, which focused on the language feature that the writer uses to emphasise the isolation of the house, was correctly recognised in only a small number of responses, while there was evidence of a solid attempt at identifying the reason why the isolation is a problem for Alice in the circumstances, in a larger number of responses. (b) There was nothing for them to do to kill time. 8(a) Kasim took up her offer to visit the house for a short break. 8(b) (i) If Kasim was not there, Alice would not have been too bothered nor felt embarrassed that she forgot the keys (“the keys wouldn’t have mattered”). or If Kasim was not there, Alice would have been relieved (“shut out”) from the duty / obligation (“responsibility”) of preparing / getting the holiday house ready (“opening up”). (ii) Alice could have enjoyed moments of solitary peace outdoors / taken a nap / lying on the grass (“dropped onto the grass”) and sunshine. 9. Harriet was a tidy / neat / organised person. 10. Harriet had the keys so she could have opened the door and got the house ready, instead of wandering off by herself. If Harriet had done so, Alice would not need to embarrass herself before Kasim.
