You may use any of the sources to help you answer the questions, in addition to those sources you are told to use. In answering the questions, you should use your knowledge of the topic to help you interpret and evaluate the sources. 1 Study Source A. What is the message of the source? 3 Why do nations host the Olympic Games? BACKGROUND INFORMATION Read this carefully. It may help you to answer the questions. Countries host the Olympic Games to showcase their cultural identity and athletic prowess on a global stage, boosting national pride and international prestige. It serves as an opportunity to stimulate economic growth through tourism and infrastructure development, leaving a legacy of improved facilities and urban renewal. The Games also foster diplomatic ties and promote global understanding through sportsmanship and cultural exchange, reinforcing a sense of unity and cooperation among nations. There are also challenges. Expenditure often surpass es budgets, leading to financial strain for taxpayers. Building infrastructure can displace communities and harm the environment. Security measures can disrupt daily life, and maintaining event facilities after the Games can be costly. Public opinion varies, with some questioning the benefits compared to the disruptions. Overall, while these events showcase a country's strengths, careful planning and management are vital to minimi se drawbacks and ensure la sting positive impacts. The Coca-Cola company is the longest standing corporate supporter of the Olympic Games, having supported the Games since 1928. We seek to be aligned with the things that people care about and, year after year, our fans tell us that they are passionate about sports and the world’s pinnacle sporting event, the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games are a truly global event, giving Coca- Cola a unique opportunity to refresh and celebrate with sports fans in the more than 200 countries where we do business.
5 . Source E: A comment by the organisers of the Paris Olympic Games, March 2024. This summer, more than 20,000 athletes, plus support staff, will be in the Athletes’ Village which cost US1.86 billion to build . The village is used as an experiment to develop the most environmentally sustainable neighbourhood for all, serving as an inspiration for future developments. Then, a year later, 6,000 new residents will move into the neighborhoo d, which was previously a run -down industrial wasteland. The games are the excuse to provide additional housing for people in need of homes. It will be co nverted into a permanent neighbo urhood, complete with housing, offices, restaurants and shops. We are providing opportunities for the neighbourhood, hoping to revitalise and give the community hope and aspiration. Source F: From a Japanese newspaper report after the Tokyo Olympic Games, October 2021. New buildings such as The Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre which features the first artificial canoe course in Japan , were built for the Tokyo Games. Hopefully, it continues to be popular among canoe enthusiasts. It was not the case in Rio de Janeiro. After the Summer Games, swimming and golf facilities were among those abandoned and the Olympic Village housing that was converted to condominiums remained unsold. With the Summer Olympics over, the National Stadium , which cost 156.9 billion yen (US1.4 billion) to build and can hold 68,000 spectators , requires a m aintenance cost of US$22 million a year, and operating rights are expected to be sold once the Olympics end. We are not sure who will want to take on the operating rights. Source D: From a speech by the Organiser of the Tokyo Olympic Games at the Closing Ceremony of the Games, 2021. Tokyo Olympics was delayed by one year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. You (the athletes) inspired us with this unifying power of sport. This was even more remarkable given the many challenges you had to face because of the pandemic. In these difficult times, you give the world the most precious of gifts: hope. For the first time since the pandemic began, the entire world came together. Sport returned to centre stage. Billions of people around the globe were united by emotion, sharing moments of joy and inspiration. This gives us hope. This gives us faith in the future. You, the best athletes of the world, could only make your Olympic dream come true because Jap an prepared the stage for you to shine. You, the Japanese people, can be extremely proud of what you have achieved.
6 SECTION B (Structured Response Question) Answer both questions. Exploring Citizenship and Governance Study the extracts carefully, and then answer the questions. Extract 1 To be more self-sufficient in food, the Government has set a ‘ 30 by 30’ goal of growing 30 per cent of our food locally by 2030. However, just 3.2 per cent of vegetables consumed by Singaporeans in 2023 were locally grown, and overall consumption of local produce, including fish and eggs remained under 10 per cent, f ar from the 30 per cent target. The low local food consumption is despite an increase in the number of vegetable farms and land-based seafood farms in 2023.
