South Africa’s diamond industry employed over 15,000 people in 2023, while in Botswana, diamonds account for roughly 80% of exports and contribute 25% of GDP. However, the environmental toll is significant: mining displaces roughly 250 tons of earth per carat, and polishing a single carat emits about 160 kg of CO₂, consumes 480 L of water, and uses 52 kWh of energy. Recognising these challenges, Tiffany & Co. champions responsible practices. The company also operates its own workshops across Botswana, Belgium, Vietnam, Mauritius, and Cambodia, employing over 2,300 local artisans. In addition, Tiffany has cut its direc t and indirect carbon emissions by 33% since 2019. Around 12% of its global floor area in buildings located within countries at which it operates has achieved LEED Silver certification, a globally recognised sustainability standard for energy-efficient and environmentally responsible building design.
