3 AO 1(ii)Using Fig. 1.1, explain how this neighbourhood achieved economic sustainability. [3]●There are a number of block of flats in the neighbourhood surrounding the market. (1 mark) This means that the number of residential units and residents living in the area will be large enough around to support local businesses in the market thus achieving economic sustainability. (Additional 1 mark) ●With large number of residential units surrounding the market, residents can just walk or cycle to the markets for their grocery and food. (1 mark) This helps to keep the transport costs low. In fact, there are as many as 27 blocks of flats that are less than 1km, about a 12-15 min walk from the market (1 additional mark). ●There is also 1 primary school and 1 secondary school in the area. These schools are also within walking distance from many blocks of flats within the area (1 mark). These schools are within 1km of the flats in the neighbourhood. Students can choose to cycle or walk to school (about 15 min) which reduces the cost of travels for them this ensuring economic sustainability (1 additional mark).
