Good morning Mr Lim and fabulous class 4S3, Before I elaborate on my post O-level choice, I’d first like to commend the school for guiding us during the most indecisive time of our lives. Thank you, Mr Lim, especially for sharing your mistakes so we can avoid making the same ones. Moving on, those that know me know that I am a very practical person. In order to understand what I learn, I need to put it into action. This is why a polytechnic education suits me best. I can see some of you sniggering or shaking your heads in disapproval. Now, please get that wrong perception that a polytechnic is only for below average students out of your heads. Firstly, with a polytechnic route, I can choose from hundreds of courses. Awesome, right? Additionally, I’d get the opportunity to work with industry experts and gain valuable experience. As some of you may know, I intend to enrol in ‘Computer Programming’ at Singapore Polytechnic (SP). Programming – we all know -- is a skill honed through practice and work. The many assignments I’ll get at SP will sharpen my problem-solving skills. Who knows? I may even gain a foothold in the company I intend to join in future as I get to work under the mentorship of such industry experts from Google, Apple or Microsoft. Some of you may begrudge the longer time – an extra year over the A levels – needed to pursue a polytechnic diploma. This extra year is crucial for me as it allows me to spread out my learning and I can also pursue other hobbies so as to grow holistically. Moreover, the ‘study and play’ culture of polytechnic fits my laid-back attitude better. The stressful, highly academic nature of JC is just too much for me. As for ITE, I’m blessed to not need to work and earn money so soon yet. To sum up, don’t make a decision based on stereotypes and others’ opinions. Do your own research. Decide what’s best for you. Hope to see some of you in SP next year! Thank you. (350 words) Written by a big boy from class 4S3 2020. Edited by LSF
