2023 Sec 4 Prelim Paper 2 Section C ANSWERS/FEEDBACK
15(a) With reference to Paragraph 1, what assumption does the writer try to correct? The writer is correcting the assumption that thrift shops have only recently appeared / are a new phenomenon / recent trend. Reject: ● It was discovered recently. (‘discovered’ = WW) ● It recently became popular. (The writer doesn’t dispute that it recently became popular, but that it didn’t exist before.)
15(b) (b) Pick out a five-word phrase from Paragraph 1 which suggests that thrift shopping has recently gained popularity. ‘a fresh wave of demand’
16. The writer says that buying clothes is now a ‘frequent pursuit’ (line 10). From Paragraph 2, give two factors that have resulted in this. (i) Trends dominating the fashion scene [1] (ii) The coming of fast fashion [1]
17(a) In Paragraph 3, we are told that ‘Fast fashion brands and websites pounced on this opportunity by making trendy clothes available at cheap prices’ (lines 10-11). The writer is adopting a critical/disapproving/condemning tone. Reject: ● Mocking/sarcastic (no sense of ‘making fun’ of them) ● Accusatory (more of an observation than an assertion of fault/guilt)
17(b) Explain in your own words what the outcome of this strategy was. From text: “… enjoyed the plentiful fruits of their labour”. The fast fashion brands and websites earned large profits. Reject: ● ‘increased / earned higher/more profits’ - MORE THAN WHAT? Must reflect the magnitude of the profits gained, i.e. ‘plentiful’

1. The alarming rate of textile waste fills landfills very quickly (leading to various forms of pollution in landfills). 2. Labourers in fast fashion factories are underpaid. 3. Labourers in fast fashion factories are exposed to toxic chemicals without proper safety measures being taken Reject: ● Labourers in fast fashion factories are exploited. - Examples must be specific - how are they being exploited? 18(b) With reference to Paragraph 3, give two examples which support Gregory’s opinion. Any 2 points
NOTE: This is NOT a direct attitude question. Simply answering with ‘disapproving’/’critical’ etc. is insufficient to convey the essence of the quote. (Number of lines also provides a clue!) The writer believes that the affordability of fast fashion does not justify the drawbacks it brings about / the severe consequences of fast fashion far outweigh the benefits of it being cheaper. 19. ‘Fast fashion may have made fashionable clothing cheaper, but at what cost?’ (lines 21-22). What does this imply about the writer’s attitude towards fast fashion? Accept: ‘more harm than good’
Benefits 1 keeps clothes and their components in circulation for a longer time clothes and their parts circulate for a greater period 2 reduces the use of finite resources to manufac
