SENSE OF PLACE — LAST-MIN PREP (Topic 1.2) 3 sub-strands (know the split!) ● What it is — importance/meanings/memories attached to a location; from experiences w/ natural/built env. + interactions w/ others there ○ This is where "belonging" sits: repeated encounters along familiar routes + significant/memorable events @ landmarks → feel belonging to neighbourhood ● How acquired: ○ Repetition (familiar paths/routine encounters) ○ Significant events (memorable moments @ gathering places/landmarks) ● How represented — via media (photos, videos, documentaries, social media posts) ○ Can reinforce OR contradict someone's own sense of place 🎯 COMMAND WORD → WHAT TO WRITE ● "Describe X's sense of place" ○ Give specific details/memories/meanings attached to location ○ Note it's personal, varies between individuals/groups ○ Eg: homemakers = convenience/variety vs retirees = leisure/relationships @ hawker centre ● "Explain how sense of place is acquired/developed" ○ Hit BOTH mechanisms: repeated everyday encounters + memorable one-off events ○ Explain the process , not just describe the place ● "Explain how sense of place can be represented" ○ Name the media form (photo/video/story map/documentary) ○ Explain what it captures (meanings/memories) ○ Explain how it may enhance or contradict others' sense of place of the same location ● ⚠ If "belonging" appears in question stem → treat as signal to use the acquisition mechanism (repetition + significant events) — NOT a separate definition to write out
⚠ DON'T FORGET ● Sense of place is NOT always positive ● Syllabus allows for negative sense of place too ● Don't assume every answer = attachment/fondness
