VJC 2026 9478/04/J2/Prelims [Turn over For examiners’ use 1 In this experiment you will investigate the motion of a system of masses. (a) Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1.1. Fig. 1.1 The distance between the bottom of the split cork and the top of the upper string loop is x. Adjust the apparatus until x is approximately 10 cm. Measure and record x. x = ……………………….….. Move the bottom mass a short distance to the left and release it. The masses will oscillate with a period T. Determine and record T. T = ……………………….….. [2]
For examiners’ use (b) Vary x and repeat (a). Present your results clearly. [3] (c) T and x are related by the expression: 4 T Px Q=+ Where P and Q are constants. Plot a suitable graph using spreadsheet to determine P and Q. Sketch the graph in the space below. Write down the equation of the trendline. P = ……………………….….. Q = ……………………….….. [3] [Total: 8]
For examiners’ use 2 In this experiment, you will investigate the energy stored in a stretched rubber band. (a) (i) Place the rubber band on the bench so that it is taut without being stretched, as shown in Fig. 2.1. The length of the rubber band is L0. Fig. 2.1 Measure and record L0 for your rubber band. L0 = ……………………….….. [1]
For examiners’ use (b) (i) Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 2.2 with the mass hanger suspended from the rubber band. Fig. 2.2 The extended length of the rubber band is L. Calculate the extension e of the rubber band where: e = L – L0 Record your answer in metres. e = ……………………….….. m The force F acting on the rubber band is given by: F = mg where m is the mass, in kg, suspended from the rubber band, And g = 9.81 N kg-1. Calculate and record F. F = ……………………….….. N [1]
For examiners’ use (c) A researcher wanted to study the energy stored by a rubber band. She performed an experiment by exerting a force F on the rubber band and measuring the length L of the rubber band. The force F and length L were measured by a force sensor and a vernier caliper respectively, and these were connected to a datalogger. The rubber band was initially subjected to a force whose value was increased slowly and continuously. This is called the loading process. The force was then decreased slowly and continuously. This is called the unloading process. The researcher’s data is recorded in the digital file: datasetq2c.xlsx. (i) Use a spreadsheet to plot a graph to show how the force F varies with extension e of the rubber band. Sketch the graph in the space below. Mark the values of the maximum force applied and the corresponding maximum extension. Label the parts of the graph that represent the loading and unloading processes with the words ‘loading’ and ‘unloading’ respectively. [2] (ii) Use your graph to estimate the amount of energy that is lost to the surroundings when the rubber band goes through one cycle of loading and unloading. energy lost = ……………………….….. J [1] (iii) Explain how you obtained the value in (c)(ii). |[1]
For examiners’ use (d) Fig. 2.3 shows a sample of a rubber band with circular cross-sectional area A. Fig. 2.3 When the rubber band undergoes one cycle of loading and unloading, the energy lost to the surroundings E depends on the initial cross-sectional area A before loading and the maximum load F exerted on the rubber band, given by the equation =E kA F where k, and are constants. Design an experiment to determine the values of and . You are not required to perform this experiment. Assume that you are provided with several rubber band s of different cross - sectional areas. The vernier caliper, force sensor and datalogger described in part (c) are not available. However, you may use any other standard laboratory equipment. Draw a diagram to show the arrangement of your apparatus. You should pay particular attention to: • the equipment you would use • the procedure to be followed • how the load is to be applied to the rubber band • how the cross -sectional area A, maximum load F, and energy lost to surroundings E are measured • the control of variables • any precautions that should be taken to improve the accuracy and safety of the experiment. 10 For examiners’ use 3 This experiment investigates the properties of a coil of wire. (a) You have been provided with two cardboard tubes with wire wrapped around them. The diameter of the tube labelled Y is DY, as shown in Fig. 3.1. The diameter of the wire is dY. Fig. 3.1 Measure and record DY and dY. DY = ……………………….….. cm dY = ……………………….….. mm [1]
