Fig. 1.1 The value of m should be 300 g. (b) (i) Record m. m ………………………….. (ii) Displace the mass hanger down through a short distance and release to start the vertical oscillations. Take measurements to determine the period of oscillation T. T ………………………….. [2] Remove the mass from the spring. tooth of clamp
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 [Turn over (c) Calculate the value of l using the equation 2 2 gT l where g = 9.81 m s2. l ………………………….. [2] (d) (i) Set up the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.2 using a string. The length d is the distance from the top of the string to the centre of the masses. Tie knots so that length d is approximately equal to your calculated value of l. Fig. 1.2 (ii) Measure and record d. d ………………………….. [1] tooth of clamp
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 (e) (i) Displace the mass approximately 15 cm to one side and release to start the left-right oscillation. Ignore the movement of the mass and watch the coils of the spring . Observe the coils moving further apart, then closer, further apart then closer. At certain times the coils appear to stay the same distance apart. (ii) Determine the time interval t between two consecutive times when the coils appear to stay the same distance apart. Record t. t ………………………….. [2] Remove the string and the mass from the spring. (iii) Estimate the percentage uncertainty in your value of t. percentage uncertainty ………………………….. [1] (f) (i) Using a mass m of 400 g, set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1.1. Repeat (b) and (c). m ………………………….. T ………………………….. l ………………………….. [2]
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 [Turn over (ii) Using another string, repeat (d), (e)(i) and (e)(ii). d ………………………….. t ………………………….. [2] Remove the string and the mass from the spring. (g) It is suggested that the relationship between t and m is t2 = km2, where k is a constant. (i) Using your data, calculate two values of k. first value of k ………………………….. second value of k ………………………….. [1]
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 (ii) State whether the results of your experiment support the relationship suggested in (g). Justify your conclusion by referring to your answer in (e)(iii). [1] [Total: 14]

©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 2 A negative-temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor is a semiconductor device whose resistance decreases with increasing temperature. In this experiment, you will investigate the properties of NTC thermistors. (a) (i) Measure and record the room temperature T. T ………………………….. (ii) Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 2.1. Fig. 2.1 (iii) Close the switch. The ammeter reading is I. The voltmeter reading is V. Record I and V. I ………………………….. V ………………………….. [1] (iv) Determine the resistance R of the thermistor. R …………………………. [1] Open the switch. A V R
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 [Turn over (v) Carefully fill the beaker with approximately 100 ml of hot water. Place the thermistor in the hot water. Take care not to let the other circuit components touch the water. Wait for 1 minute. Record the temperature of the water, the current through and the potential difference across the thermistor. Twater …………………………. V …………………………. I …………………………. [1] Open the switch. (vi) Determine the resistance of the thermistor. R …………………………. [1] (b) In another setup as shown in Fig. 2.2, the property of a different thermistor is studied. Note that you are not required to construct this circuit. Fig. 2.2 The potential difference V across the new thermistor is changed by slowly increasing the e.m.f. of the source. After every increment of the e.m.f., 30 seconds is allowed to lapse for the current in the circuit and the temperature of the thermistor to stabilize, before the potential difference V across and the current I through the thermistor are recorded. The data collected is recorded in the digital file Q2dataset.xlsx. A V variable e.m.f.
©EJC 2026 9478/04/J2H2Prelim/2026 (i) Using a spreadsheet, plot the graph of R against I. Sketch the graph in the space below. [1] (ii) Describe the variation of the resistance of the thermistor with the current. [1] (iii) Calculate the power p dissipated in the thermistor at t = 90 s. p …………………………. [1] (iv) Estimate the energy dissipated in the thermistor for the duration in which the data was collected. energy dissipated …………………………. [1] (v) Explain how you obtained your answer in (iv). [2]
