3 Is leaving the European Union the right decision for Britain? BACKGROUND INFORMATION The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership. Britain has been a member state of the EU since 1 January 1973. EU allows goods and people to move between countries freely. It also has its own currency, the euro, which is being used by 19 of the member countries, its own parliament and it now sets rules in a wide range of areas – including on the environment, tran sport and consumer rights.
