This is illustrated in the source where the people are crowding around the word “HATE” and are unravelling it. This shows that even though they are removing it, the presence of the word shows that hate exists among New Zealanders. There are people who hate others, and as such this shows that the author thinks negatively of the New Zealanders and hence is not a supporter. 2-3 L3 Supports, based on portrayal Award 4m for identifying positive portrayal, 5m for explaining positive portrayal. The cartoonist is a supporter of New Zealanders as he portrays them in a positive manner as being inclusive. This is illustrated in the source where the people are working together to remove the word “HATE” and “Let’s unravel it, let’s pull it apart. Let’s make something better. With aroha for our Muslim whanau”. This shows that the people in New Z ealand are inclusive towards people from different backgrounds and are willing to work together to achieve harmony in the society . And they are showing their support for the Muslims who suffered the mosque attacks in March. Se or De: 5m Se and De: 6m Similarity: Both sources are similar in saying that discrimination is wrong. This can be seen in Source B which states “ No one should feel fear or shame for what they wear or who they are. I don't want them to feel scared. This is their home and they are like us, jus t normal people trying to live their life .” This shows that one should not be discriminated just because of their belief or how they dress as it is one’s choice to do so and everyone has the right to this. Thus, to discriminate is wrong. Similarly, in Source C, it states that “ Intolerance towards Muslims in New Zealand is all the more distressing because it is wholly unjustified.” This shows that discrimination is unjustified and therefore wrong. This does not make sense and they should not be treated as such. Thus, they are being treated in an unfair manner. This can be seen in Source B which states “No one should feel fear or shame for what they wear or who they are. I don't want them to feel scared. This is their home and they are like us, just normal people trying to live their life .” This shows that one should not be discriminated just because of their belief or how they dress as it is one’s choice to do so and everyone has the right to this. At that point of time, N ew Zealanders may think that such discrimination towards a group of people is an acceptable action . This is evident in Source D which states “a neighbour rang to report that a large Maori guy just came out of the campus housing.” This shows that people are so unreasonable and petty to be doing so just because people of different ethnicity are living near them. 2-3

This is evident in Source D which states “ Without checking the rental list, the security guards barged into our house and bombarded us with questions ”. This shows that the security guards did not follow proper procedures but instead acted irrationally and stormed into the house. Such unprofessional behaviour is surprising. Source D states that “There was also an instance where I received an anonymous hate note in the internal work mail and after investigations, the handwriting later matched to a retired Pakeha colleague.” This is surprising as Background Information says that “ With people from such diverse backgrounds living in the country, New Zealand is well known for its strong social integration.” This shows that New Zealanders are supposedly inclusive and are welcoming towards people from different backgrounds. So it is surprising that Maoris have to face discrimination. OR/ AND I am n ot surprised that people behave unreasonably as Source C shows the impact of media on how people view others.
