Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper. You may use a soft pencil for any diagrams, graphs or rough working. Do not use paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid. Begin each question on a fresh page. Answer all questions in Section A and either Question 3 or 4 in Section B. The insert contains all the Resources referred to in the questions. You should make reference to appropriate examples studied in the field or the classroom, even where such examples are not specifically requested by the question. Diagrams and sketch maps should be drawn whenever they serve to illustrate an answer. You are reminded of the need for good English and clear presentation in your answers. At the end of the examination, fasten your work together. The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question. SAJC/8834/01/FE/2023 2 Section A Answer both Questions 1 and 2. 1 Resource 1 shows sources of energy in the UK, 1961 -2015. Resource 2 shows the elevation above sea level for part of Central London. Resource 3 shows a comparison of the main global greenhouse gases. (a) Using Resource 1, describe the changes in the usage of energy sources in the UK from 1961 to 2015. [4] (b) Using Resource 2, explain the characteristics of Central London that make it vulnerable to the effects of a rise in sea level. [5] (c) Using Resource 3, explain why the named greenhouse gases are a concern for global warming. [3] (d) With the help of examples , explain one social and one economic impact of contemporary climate change. [6] 2 Resource 4A and 4B show the rainfall changes between 1900 and the recent period in Australia during its dry (April to October) and wet (October to April) seasons respectively. Resource 5 shows the average temperature of Australia between 1950 and 2020, as well as its projections made in 1992 using climate modelling. (a) Describe the changes in the rainfall patterns of Australia in its dry and wet seasons as shown in Resources 4A and 4B respectively. [6] (b) Compare the observed temperature with the projected temperature range for the period between 1992 and 2020 shown in Resource 5. [3] (c) With reference to Resources 4A, 4B and 5, explain the extent to which we can be certain about the future impacts of climate change.
