TheNazi-SovietNon-AggressionPactTheNazi-SovietNon-AggressionPact,otherwiseknownas theMolotov-RibbentropPactwassignedon23rdAugust1939byNaziGermanyandtheSovietUnionshortlybeforeWorldWar II. In thePact,thetwoformerenemiesagreedtotakenomilitaryactionagainsteachotherforthenext10years.WithEuropeonthebrinkofanothermajorwar, SovietleaderJosephStalinviewedthePactasawaytokeephiscountryonpeacefultermswithGermany, whilegivinghimtimetobuilduptheSovietmilitary. TheSovietarmywasseverelyweakenedafterStalin’s GreatPurgein1937,wherehehadimprisonedorexecutedmanymilitarygeneralsandofficersforgoingagainsthim.Ontheotherhand,HitlerwantedtoreclaimthePolishCorridorandthecityofDanzig.HewasconfidentthatthePolishforcescouldbedefeatedeasily.
