1914-1941 BOOK 1 GENERAL TIMELINE 1914 – Austrian Archduke assassinated by Bosnian nationalists - ‘the spark” → WW1 Start 1917 – Russian Revolution starts, Bolsheviks (led by Lenin) 1919 – Paris Peace Conference to end WW1. TOV punishes GER to end WW1 (e.g. War Guilt Clause- TL blame for war, War reparations: £6.6 billion, Only 100k in army) → Loss of national pride, humiliation, unfair (GER no say) “Stab in back theory”- betrayed by communists and jews (used by Hitler) 1918–19 – Weimar Republic starts. 1923: Hyperinflation (eg. kept print money) Golden age: 1924-1929 (economy good) Too much democracy→ Govt can’t make fast decisions → Ineffective in handling crisis 1919–1920 – The 1st Red Scare begins→ fear of communism 1920 : LON forms. US no join + No Army = weak 1922 – USSR forms, end of imperial rule in Russia 1929 – Great Depression begins → Worldwide economic collapse. WR: Ineffective (Relied US loans) JPN: Suffer (no natural resources)- Rely on trade+ exports → Growing discontent, unemployment, social instability 1931 – Manchurian Crisis : JPN’s Kwantung Army invades Manchuria without approval → weak civilian govt loses control, shows growing influence of military (acted independently) 1932 – League of Blood Incident : JPN ultranationalists assassinate key business/political elites → weakens democracy, militarism rises. 1933 – Hitler appointed Chancellor of Germany → Reichstag Fire - Enabling Act to take TL control → Start Nazi regime→ban opposition and take control. 1934 – Night of the Long Knives: Hitler murders rivals (e.g. Ernst Röhm) to consolidate power in the Nazi Party - Afraid of SA too powerful 1935 – Abyssinian Crisis : Italy invades Ethiopia. LON imposes weak sanctions-FAIL→ Emboldens Mussolini + Hitler. 1936 – 26 Feb Incident JPN: young army officers attempt coup→ fails, but public sympathy leads to more military influence. 1937 – Marco Polo Bridge Incident (JPN soldiers demand entry into China, gunfire exchanged)--> Sino-Japanese war (WWII in Asia). 1938 – Night of Broken Glass - Violence against Jews and their property. Munich Agreement : UK and FR appease Hitler by giving him the Sudetenland.
