2 How did the people in Singapore respond to the British after WWII? BACKGROUND INFORMATION Read this carefully. It may help you to answer some of the questions. The years following the Japanese Occupation saw the return of British rule in Singapore. However, the British were no longer respected by the people of Singapore, who suffered during the postwar years due to problems like housing challenges and food shortages. Therefore, they started questioning the effectiveness of British rule in Singapore. Study the following sources to find out how the people in Singapore reacted to British rule in the postwar years. Source A: A cartoonist’s impression of the Anti-National Service Riots in 1954. SACSS WA3 2023 History /2G3
3 Source B: An adapted open letter issued by the Singapore People’s Anti-British Union on 1 st April 1954, about the National Service Ordinance. The British Emperor madly and meanly imposed the ‘National Service Ordinance’ on all of us. What they want is to collect and gather all our innocent youngsters to be their ammunitions*, to be used by the British for invading. Dear brothers of all nationalities! Asians definitely do not like to kill each other! All of us must be united immediately! * Ammunitions : Explosive military weapons Source C: Adapted report of the Maria Hertogh Riots taken from the Daily Telegraph, reproduced in The Straits Times, 14 December 1950. The handling of the situation by the Government is inappropriate. It is not yet clear how Maria Hertogh, the Muslim girl, came to be placed in a Christian convent. A quarrel which was purely the concern of the Dutch had been allowed to cause widespread disturbances and casualties in a British colony, spreading hatred against the British. Source D: Comments by Mr Khoo Teng Soon, made in 1988. He was working as the editor of The Straits Times during the Maria Hertogh Riots. The Straits Times sent photographers there. And this was something I did and I regret up till today. You know we published a picture and that was my decision to publish that picture of her kneeling in the convent before the Virgin Mary. That time of course I was very young and I did not realise that just a photo like that could start a riot and result in the loss of quite a number of lives. I think it was foolish of the judge to hand her over to the convent. * The Sunday Times and The Singapore Standard were Singapore newspapers published in English.
