English Language Listening Comprehension Examination Secondary 4 Express (SA1) 2017 Instructions to candidates. (CD Duration: 45 mins)(byelaine/editedbykrtc/2nd) Answer all questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided on the Question Paper. You may take notes as you listen to the recording. Part 1 　 You will hear three different extracts. For questions 1 to 6, tick the answer (A, B, C or D) which fits best according to what you hear. There are two questions for each extract. You will hear each extract twice. Extract 1 Text for Questions 1 and 2 (Dietician-female and Patient-male) M I was sent to see you about what to eat to help manage my high blood pressure. I am already trying to lose weight by avoiding fast foods and fizzy drinks. F That’s a good start. Suppose a circular plate represents your meal, how much would carbohydrates like rice and starchy foods make up your meal? M Maybe half? Otherwise, I don’t feel full! F What about protein, like meat and toufu, as well as fruits and vegetables? M Probably protein would occupy about two-thirds of the remaining space. Fruits are for dessert, so there’s no need to eat so much. And the only vegetables I eat are carrots and cauliflower. F It is a common misconception that we don’t need much fruit. In fact, research shows that a good diet should comprise half a plate of fruit and vegetables, a quarter plate of carbohydrates and the remaining portion should be protein. M What? Extract 2 Text for Questions 3 and 4 (2 Friends discuss travel plans) M The tour agency I spoke to is offering a special package for November to December, if you are interested to go to see the Northern Lights. F Oh that’s too far and expensive! I thought of visiting an Asian destination. M Well, the agency said that ladies often like Thailand or Vietnam, because the shopping and food are relatively affordable. F I’ve also heard that Ho Chi Minh City is worth a visit. M But, I have already been there. How about Korea, since you said that you could ask your travel agent for some details? F I did! He said that his agency has a November tour to Seoul and Jeju Island which will cover all the main attractions. M That would be great, but what’s the cost? How long is the tour? I only have 9 days of annual leave left. F Well, the whole trip will take 7 days, so you’ll have enough time. For twin- sharing, the cost will be $4,775 per person. This includes airfare, accommodation in 5-star hotels, meals as well as transport by means of luxury coaches. M Er, any discount on the price? (Listen to extract 2 again) Extract 3 Text for Questions 5 and 6 (Talk on safe driving habits to new drivers) Here are six tips on how to be a safe driver. First, always anticipate that someone might dash across a pedestrian crossing or a motorist might suddenly switch lanes without signalling. Also, use your turn signals to alert other motorists of your intention to change lanes or to turn into a side road. Signal early to allow time for others to respond before you move. Another major cause of accidents is driving too close to the vehicle in front of you. With the tougher rules on using mobile communication devices whilst driving, the LTA is emphasising the need to stay focussed while driving. Avoid eating, drinking, fiddling with devices like your GPS or radio, or even talking to your passengers. It is better to be safe, so avoid driving when you are fatigued. Finally, do not speed and do not drive when intoxicated. Police have increased surveillance and are on the lookout for these offences. (Listen to extract 3 again)

Part 2 You will hear six short recordings. In each recording, a reviewer shares the product which he/she feels is the most innovative at the moment. For questions 7 -12 choose from the list (A-G) the characteristic of the product each retailer feels will appeal to consumers. There is one extra letter which you do not need to use. DO NOT USE ANY LETTER MORE THAN ONCE. You will hear the six recordings twice. Part 3 You will hear an Assembly talk to students on contact lenses. For Question 13, choose from the list (A-F) four pieces of information which are stated or implied in the recording. Put a tick (√ ) for each piece of information. No marks will be awarded if you tick more than four pieces of information. You will hear the recording twice. Text for Question 13 (Assembly talk to students) Anyone who needs to move about without the inconvenience of wearing eyewear will agree that a pair of contact lenses is the best invention next to the air-conditioner. This invention is now so advanced that they not only come in different colours and patterns, they can also correct myopia or short-sightedness, hyperopia or long-sightedness and even astigmatism. So, as an Asian with brown eyes, I can now wear customised contact lenses so that I could look like Mystique in X-men—except that I would probably scare everyone I meet on the streets! My contact lenses will not impede my peripheral vision and can be worn like sunglasses to care for conditions like cataract and macular degeneration within the eye-ball.
