2019 O level Paper 2 Section A 1. (i) latest (ii) new 2. (i) Invitations to latest releases at their two state-of-the-art cinemas (The picture shows people watching a movie in a comfortable movie theatre.) (ii) Offers to attend the ‘Make a Movie Workshop’ before non-members every month (The picture shows a person working a video camera, hence the link to making a movie. The key to the answer lies in priority for members [‘before non-members’] and not just the chance to join the workshop.) 3. Volunteers are required to spend two days a month at the club. 4. All you have to do is JOIN our club.
2019 O level Paper 2 Section B 5. The phrase ‘fading hum of the taxi’ suggests that the sound made by the vehicle that was driving away was getting softer and softer. (Note that ‘fading’ is in –ing form so the explanation should also be in –ing form to show that it was a process.) The ‘murmuring of the water’ suggests that the moving water in the stream was making a continuous, low-pitched sound that could hardly be heard. (A murmur is a low-pitched continuous sound that is often indistinct or hardly audible.) The ‘whisper of tiny movements’ shows that the small animals in the hedge and grass were making very soft sounds. All 3 details cumulatively indicate that the surrounding were very quiet. (Marker’s Report reminds students to focus on the sounds and not be distracted by the movements.) 6. (a) ‘a show of amusement at her absent-mindedness’ (‘show of amusement’ indicates that this reaction was not natural but put up by her to hide her feelings. ‘absent-mindedness’ must be included to show that this reaction was directed at her act of forgetting her keys.) (b) (i) Kasim walked away from her (ii) He did not say anything as he walked away (The word ‘shrivelled’ means shrunken. We are looking for evidence of what may seem to be a negative response to her forgetting her keys.) 7. (a) He repeats the word ‘no’ to indicate the location was remote with no roads and no amenities/ emphasise the isolation of the place. (b) With no other places nearby to go, they had nothing to do to occupy time until someone came to unlock the door. 8. (a) He had taken up Alice’s offer to take him to the family’s house for a short break. (b) From passage: But if she had been alone the keys wouldn’t have mattered. It would have been a kind of bliss, even, to be shut out from the responsibility of opening up the house and making it ready for others. She could have dropped onto the grass and dozed in the warmth of the sunshine. (i) If Kasim wasn’t there, Alice would even feel happy about forgetting the keys as she would not have the duty of preparing the house for the others. (ii) If Kasim wasn’t there, Alive could have taken the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings and take a rest. 9. Harriet was a tidy and organised person.
