States a position, persuades the reader Requires well-organised arguments Shows development of ideas leading to a logical conclusion Describes a place, a person or an event Appeals to the senses Creates vivid mental images May heighten a mood or atmosphere EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH Friends can be grouped into three types. Acquaintances are people you know only briefly. You meet them by chance, and cross path occasionally. Fair-weathered friends appear when they need something from you. They come to you only if you have something to offer, and disappear when calamity befalls you. But true friends stick by you through thick and thin. They are your encouragers, shepherds and lighthouses. They make you laugh more than they make you cry. They are the ones to pick you up as life’s travelling companions. ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPH To start off, technology such as phones and tablets are capable of hindering one’s quest to academic excellence. With entertainment and the other endless forms of fun being a few taps away, many students would find such temptation irresistible and succumb to it. Consequently, their focus would slowly drift away and end up at some character on his quest to kill a monster. This loss of attention is further aggravated when students lack self-discipline. Unable to control themselves, they delve deeper into the virtual world and forget the actual reason why such devices were used in the first place. As for those who have a lesser interest in such games, a buzz of the phone in the middle of a study session would leave them wondering about the origins of the notification, and ultimately distracted from the book on the table when they reach out to grab their phones. Hence, the introduction such devices are bound to leave students distracted and possibly completely off task DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH The Jurong West food market is just like any ordinary market. It has a noisy and vibrant atmosphere, which displays the passion and warm-heartedness of Singaporeans, just like the tropical climate in Singapore.There is a wet market within the food market itself, so the floor may be wet and slippery, with the air even filled with a pungent and fishy smell.
