Text from the first pages1. An Unexpected / Frightening Event Trapped The lift shuddered violently, dropped a few centimetres, then groaned to a halt. Without warning , the lights died, and I was swallowed by a darkness so absolute that I could not see my own hand. It was nearly ten o’clock, and I was alone, returning home from a gruelling tuition lesson. “Hello? Is anyone there?” My voice echoed back, thin and feeble . I jabbed the emergency button repeatedly, yet only silence answered me. Initially , I tried to reassure myself that it was a minor glitch that would be fixed in minutes. However , as time dragged by, the air grew stifling , and beads of sweat trickled down my temples. Gradually , a dark sense of foreboding crept over me, like a distant rumbling of thunder. Every creak of the cables above sounded like a warning. Frightening newspaper headlines flashed through my mind, and my heart thundered against my ribs. I sank to the floor, hugging my knees, grappling with the panic that threatened to engulf me. “Stay calm,” I whispered, though my trembling hands betrayed me. Just as my resolve was about to crumble, a muffled voice crackled through the speaker. “Can you hear me? Do not panic. Help is on the way.” Never had a stranger’s voice sounded so comforting. I clung to it like a lifeline, counting my breaths slowly. Moments later , heavy footsteps and the clanging of metal echoed above. Eventually , the doors were prised open, and a torch beam sliced through the darkness. I stumbled out, legs buckling , my face paper-white . A neighbour rallied around me , pressing a bottle of water into my shaking hands, while a rescuer placed a reassuring arm around my shoulders. Tears of relief spilled down my cheeks, and I did not bother to hide them. Ultimately , the ordeal taught me that composure is invaluable in a crisis. Had I surrendered to panic, I would have drained my strength and clouded my judgement. To this day, I remain acutely aware of every shudder of a lift, yet I no longer let fear dictate my actions. Evidently , the greatest danger lay not in the darkness, but in my own thoughts. Helping Someone / Being Happy The Lost Boy The evening crowd at the MRT station surged past me like a restless tide, everyone hurrying home after a long day. I was already late for my piano lesson and was glancing at my watch for the third time when I noticed a small boy standing motionless beside a pillar. He clutched a battered toy dinosaur to his chest, his lower lip quivering . Instinctively , I crouched beside him. “Are you lost?” I asked softly. He nodded, and a choked sob escaped him. Although every instinct told me to rush to my lesson, I could not bring myself to walk away. A child so small, swallowed by a sea of strangers, needed someone, and at that moment I was the only one who had noticed. Without hesitation , I took his sticky hand in mine and led him to the station control room. “What’s your name?” I asked, hoping to distract him. “Daniel,” he whispered. While the staff made an urgent announcement over the speakers, I mimicked the ferocious roar of his dinosaur. His eyes widened, and then, to my relief, he burst into a bout of laughter , momentarily forgetting his fear. Barely two minutes later, a woman burst through the crowd, her face etched with worry and her hair dishevelled. “Daniel!” she cried, sweeping him into her arms. She held him so tightly that his dinosaur nearly fell. Tears of relief streamed down her cheeks. “I turned away for just a second,” she stammered . “I do not know how to thank you.” “There’s no need,” I replied, though my voice trembled with emotion. As Daniel waved goodbye, a warm glow spread through my chest. I had missed my lesson, yet I felt lighter than I had in weeks. Not only did the experience fill me with profound contentment, but it also taught me that small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact . Consequently , I have resolved to lend a helping hand whenever I can, for I now understand that true happiness lies in bringing joy to others. A Mistake and Its Consequence A Message Forgotten “Don’t worry, Miss Tan. I will pass the message to everyone,” I had assured our drama teacher, brimming with confidence . She had moved our final rehearsal to the school hall, just two days before the inter-school competition. Regrettably , my reputation as the conscientious class chairperson crumbled that afternoon. Caught up in a mountain of revision, I neglected to inform my teammates. By three o’clock, I was pacing the empty hall, yet not a soul appeared. Meanwhile , the rest of my team waited in the old classroom, growing more bewildered by the minute. When I finally realised
