Text from the first pages2017 EL Paper 2 Text 2
Q5 At the beginning of this text there is a description of the lean appearance of the wolves which were following Henry. Explain how the language used in paragraph 1 emphasises their leanness. ● Demand of the question: identify the relevant quote + explain (not merely paraphrase) the quote + give a synonym of ‘leanness’ [1m] ● Synonyms: Slim, Slender, Svelte (DNA) ● Why do you think these synonyms are inaccurate? ● Walking skeletons, mere skinbags – are these expressions flattering?
Q5 Firstly, the wolves were described as ‘walking skeletons’ which suggests that the wolves were thin to the bones, emphasising that they were emaciated (leanness) Secondly, they were ‘mere skinbags’ which suggests that they seemed to be reduced to a thin layer of skin on their bodies, emphasising that the wolves were extremely thin.
Q5 Thirdly, ‘their muscles like strings’ compares the wolves’ muscles to mere thin threads, suggesting that they must be extremely skinny/scrawny.
Q6 In paragraph 1, the writer refers to the lack of light as the ‘gloom’. Identify two separate words used later in the paragraph which also describe light. Demand of the question: look for descriptive words (adjectives) i) ‘grey’ ii) ‘sombre’
Q7 ‘With the night came horror. Not only were the famished wolves growing bolder, but Henry was tired.’ i) What effect does the writer create by using a short sentence followed by a longer one? Demand of the question: writer’s technique - use of contrast. What is the effect of the contrast as intended by the writer? The writer wants to create a sense of danger.
Q7 ii The writer tells us ‘With the night came horror.’ Explain in your own words what was happening. Demand of the question: look for what took place (happened) after the given expression, then paraphrase in OW. Question requires you to link your answer to ‘horror’. From the text : Not only were the famished wolves growing bolder, but Henry was tired. ii) The nightfall incited terror because the wolves became more daring/audacious and Henry became too sleepy/fatigued to fight the wolves off.
Q8a) The wolf was ‘looking upon him with the arrogance of possession’. Which two things did the wolf do that clearly indicated she thought she owned Henry? Demand of the question: look for two actions by the wolf in the given sentence (line 12) i) She deliberately stretched herself. ii) She yawned full in his face.
Q8b) In paragraph 2, the writer tells us that the wolves looked ‘like children gathered round a spread table, waiting to eat’. What does the spread table ‘ refer to? Demand of the question: infer from the given line. Realise that a simile (comparison) is used – They (wolves) looked to him (Henry) like.. (line 16). b) It refers to Henry, whom the wolves perceived as their meal.
Q9 In paragraph 3, what was unusual about the wolves’ behaviour? Demand of the question: think about what is usual/expected. Then present your answer to show a contrast between what was expected and what took place that was unexpected. The wolves did not scatter for the first time when there was daylight. The wolves did not go away. The wolves were still surrounding Henry even when dawn came. These answers do not show contrast !
