The facts: · There are 6,000 violent crimes a year in the Borough of Southwark; 853 were reported in October. · The borough is 46 police officers short of the recommended 800 officers. Foot patrols are particularly understaffed because of recruitment problems. · Only one in four households on the estate has a car. · Nearly 30% of the population is under 16. · The number of lone parents has increased over the past 10 years from 10 to 16. · 57% of the estate's 11,000 population are from ethnic minorities; 3,500 are black Africans, mainly from Nigeria.
