2 Section A Answer all the questions in this section. Question 1, 2 and 3 carry 12 marks and Question 4 carries 14 marks. You should allocate your time accordingly. The Globalisation of Economic Activity 1 Taiwan is an economy in East Asia where rapid economic growth took place in the 1960s. Fig. 1 shows the exports from Taiwan (by per centage) in 1960 and 1997. (a) Describe and account for the changes in the export of primary and secondary products. [4] (b) With reference to any named country you have studied, examine the strategies of the government in promoting economic development. [8] Population Issues and Challenges 2 Fig. 2a shows the population pyramids of Lesotho and Norway in 2000 while Fig. 2b shows the projected population pyramids of these two countries in 2025. (a) Identify two differences between t he dependent populations of Lesotho and Norway. [2] (b) Compare the main changes in population structure between 2000 and 2025 for these two countries. [4] (c) What will be the likely impacts of the demographic changes experienced by a country such as Norway? [6] Urban Issues and Challenges 3 Fig. 3 shows the world’s fastest growing cities in the period 1985-2000. (a) Define the term urbanisation. [2] (b) (i) Identify the general pattern between the locations of world’s fastest growing cities and the level of urbanisation in the various parts of the world. Is there any exception? [4] (b) Using Fig. 4b, describe the changes in land use from area X to area Y. The Globalisation of Economic Activity 5 EITHER (a) What is the impact of new internati onal division of labour on production techniques and labour? [9] (b) Using examples, illustrate how globalisation has affected the economies of the DCs, LDCs and NIEs. [16] OR (a) Describe the changes and locational shifts in various economic activities in the last 50 years. [9] (b) To what extent are the impacts brought about by any one transnational corporation (TNC) you have studied beneficial to the host country? [16] Population Issues and Challenges 6 EITHER (a) Briefly explain the reasons behind mortality differentials in DCs and LDCs. [9] (b) To what extent are anti -natal policies often more effective than pro-natal policies? [16] OR (a) How useful is demographic transition theory in predicting future population scenarios in the LDCs?
