2 Superintendent’s Foreword Motivating Young Writers Writing involves the hand, eyes and both sides of the brain, and is a complex language skill for many young learners. Some people believe that, unlike speaking, reading and writing may not be instinctive skills for human beings. While speaking may be encoded in our DNA, we have to teach our minds how to read and write. Writing in the 21 st century can also be different from writing in the past, because of technology. A classic example is the case of Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher who bought a typewriter in order to continue to write due to his worsening eyesight. While he learnt how to type with his eyes closed, the typewriter caused his writing style to change – his sentences became shorter and more ‘telegram’ style. Similarly, nowadays, with the use of the Internet and text -messaging on mobile phones, written communication is much faster, but the way we write may also be changing. Turning challenges into opportunities, the West 3 Cluster Support Group for Secondary Tamil Language (TL ) is promoting a culture of writing among TL students, by helping to develop their essay writing and email crafting skills, both of which are equally necessary in the 21st century. The focus of the writing is on greater infusion of cultural knowledge, use of contemporary materials and IT - enabled learning. Some of these essays and emails have been curated for this publication, to serve as a teaching and learning resource for TL teachers and students at the Cluster level. The students’ works celebrate the richness of the Tamil Language and it is hoped that other young writers will be inspired to continue to develop their writing skills and use the Tamil Language in their daily lives. This aspiration is in line with the Ministry of Education’s emphasis on the learning of Mother Tongue Languages (MTLs) as a way to understand Singapore and the world through our MTLs. In conclusion, I would like to thank all the TL teachers in the West 3 Cluster Support Group for their passion in the Tamil Language, and for nur turing our students with critical and inventive thinking, as well as enabling them to convey their ideas confidently in both written and spoken forms.
