ச�ொல்வளக் கையேடு GLOSSARY OF ENGLISH TO TAMIL TERMS

This glossary containing English terms and their Tamil equivalents is the culmination of the joint effort of the former Translation Standardisation Committee for the Tamil Media (TSCTM) and the current Tamil Resource Panel (TRP) of the National Translation Committee (NTC). The terms are widely used by the broadcast and print media as well as other practitioners of the language, such as translators and interpreters in both the public and private sectors. We strived hard to get the corresponding Tamil words that are not only closest in meaning but also best capture the nuances of the source words, to retain their essence and flavour. Many of the terms in the glossary were once used by the MediaCorp Tamil Newsroom Unit and we wish to thank them for their generosity in sharing them with us. Members approached its work methodically, with accuracy foremost in mind, spending countless hours in constructive arguments on which Tamil words to use. The glossary was carefully vetted by the well-known retired educationist and grammarian, Mr P Kesavan. We are aware that there may be alternative Tamil words for some of the English words in the glossary. Language is constantly evolving and we will try and update it whenever necessary. The glossary does not strive to include every word, for it is neither a dictionary nor an encyclopaedia. It contains only the common words and terms used by our media, teachers, students and translators. But the TRP will continue to expand the list of words.
