My son (7 years old) started classes before me to help him to improve his concentration at school, and now my wife and daughter (4 years old) have also joined. The team really do all they can to make the 1, training enjoyable and to encourage us to aim as high as possible. The techniques are explained clearly and at a pace that challenges participants, whatever their level. There is never any unnecessary pressure to keep up with everyone else. 4 Section B Text3 In the text below, two brothers, Mehmet and HOseyin, are spending an afternoon on the beach at a holiday resort. Read the text carefully and answer Questions 5 -14 in the Question Paper. 1 One summer afternoon, a small boy played on the beach just down from the hotel. He was alone, oblivious to anything around him, passing sand from one hand to the other, digging down deeper and deeper to the spot where the sand grew cool. Again and again he passed the sand back and forth through his fingers, each time discarding the coarser grains. When only the finest grains remained, they ran like water as he opened his hands and poured them 5 back onto the beach. He loved their smooth feel and it was an action of which he never tired. 2 For an hour he had been watching the group of long-limbed older boys playing water polo, and he yearned for the day when he would be big enough to join them. For now he was content to sit, waiting for his brother, HOseyin, who was one of the players. HOseyin had a summer job putting out and collecting the hotel's beach chairs, but when that was done, he 10 would immediately wade into the water to join the game. Since a coach had said he showed promise as an athlete, he was torn between two dreams: to be either a professional volleyball player or a professional water polo player. 3 'We need to get your feet back on the ground!' teased his mother. 'Why?' demanded his father. 'With those strong legs he has as much chance as anyone.' 15 4 Mehmet leapt up and waved as soon as he spotted HOseyin striding up the beach to collect him. HOseyin waved back. Mehmet let out a deep breath. A few times recently, with his head in the clouds, HOseyin had forgotten that he was in charge of the little boy and set off home without him. Mehmet would not have been in any danger, except that he had a three-year- old's inability to orient himself and would probably have wandered the wrong way. This place 20 was a world away from the village where his parents had been born many years before, where back then a small child alone would never get lost. 5 Mehmet's mother called him a little miracle, but HOseyin's pet name for Mehmet, 'little nuisance', seemed to have a truer ring. HOseyin often felt this when he had to keep an eye on him but wanted to be off with friends. 'Come on, Mehmet, let's go home,' said the older 25 boy, cuffing his smiling brother fondly round the ear. Holding his little brother's hand, HOseyin made his way to the road. 6 'HOseyin! Mehmet!' Their mother, emerging from the staff entrance to the hotel, hurried to meet them. 'Hello, darlings,' she said. Mehmet, although glad deep down to see her at last, scowled as she scooped him into her arms. He hated being picked up in the street and 30 wriggled furiously. He was not a baby. She kissed his cheek before putting him down. 7 'Mummy?' They were passing the advertising boards showing a boy, his smile wide and cheeky, holding a glass overflowing with fizzy lemonade. One day, Mehmet thought, he would buy himself a bottle. It would make a loud 'tsok' when the top came off, and bubbles would flow like in the advert. Mehmet gazed at this image every day and never gave up hope. His 35 mother knew what he was going to ask. 'Why have a drink in a bottle when you can have a fresh one?' she said. On reaching home, Mehmet would be handed a glass of still, pale liquid, sweetened with sugar but nevertheless sharp enough to make him draw his cheeks in. It was as flat as milk.
