ItwasanattemptbytheSovietUniontolimittheabilityoftheUnitedStates,BritainandFrancetochannelresourcestotheirrespectivespheresofoccupationwithinthecityofBerlin,whichlayentirelyinsideSoviet-occupiedEastGermany. AlarmedbytheMarshallPlan,aswellaseffortsbytheWesternAlliesto introducea singlecurrencytothezonestheyoccupiedinGermanyandBerlin,theSovietsimposedablockadeonWesternzonesof Berlinin June1948.ThiswasmeanttoforcetheAlliesoutofBerlinbyattemptingtostarvethepeoplethere.Tocounterthisblockade,USPresidentTrumanorderedtheBerlinAirlift.Tensionsheightenedasa resultoftheactionsof thesuperpowers.Thecrisiswasa resultof competingoccupationpoliciesandrisingtensionsbetweenWesternpowersandtheSovietUnion.
