3 WhydidChinagetinvolvedintheKoreanWar? BACKGROUNDINFORMATION Readthiscarefully. Itmayhelpyoutoanswersomeofthequestions. InJune1950,NorthKoreantroopsenteredSouthKoreaandquicklyoverpoweredSouthKorea’s forces.U.S.PresidentTrumanimmediatelysentadvisers,supplies,andmilitaryassistanceto theSouth.HealsocalledupontheUnitedNations(UN)to takeurgentactionsagainstNorthKoreaandsentU.S.GeneralMacArthurtoleadtheUNforcestodrivebackNorthKoreantroopsbehindthe38thparallel.However, believingthathecouldpushCommunistforcescompletelyoutofKorea,MacArthurdrovetheNorthKoreansfarbeyondthe38thparallel,despiteChina’s warningthatit wouldretaliateif theUNforcescontinuedtoadvance.WhenGeneralMacArthurwentontoattacknearChineseborders,ChinajoinedinthewaronthesideoftheNorthKoreans.
