2 Section A Answer all the questions in this section. Questions 1, 2 and 4 carry 12 marks and Question 3 carries 14 marks. You should allocate your time accordingly. The Globalisation of Economic Activity 1 Table 1 shows the Human Development Index for 15 c ountries in 2005. (a) Describe the variations in Human Development Index (HDI) in Table 1. [3] (b) Why have some Less Developed Countries (LDCs) attained higher HDI scores than other LDCs? [5] (c) Evaluate the HDI as an indicator of development. [4] Population Issues and Challenges 2 Figures 1A, 1B and 1C depict the age-sex structure of the Philippines in 2000, 2025 and 2050. (a) From Figure 1A, state evidence that the Philippines experienced high fertility and mortality rates in 2000. [2] (b) With reference to Figures 1B and 1C, describe how Philippines’ population structure changed from 2025 to 2050. [5] (c) What are the problems associated with the changes in Philippines’ population structure as described in (b). [5] Urban Issues and Challenges 3 Figure 2 shows the land-use map of Barcelona. (a) Describe the location of residential land-use in Barcelona. [4] (b) Using evidence from the Figure 2, to what extent does the bid-rent theory explain land-use patterns in Barcelona? [4] (c) Outline how you could construct a land-use map. [6]

(a) Explain the differences in urban growth rates of settlements in Less Developed Countries (LDCs) and Developed Countries (DCs). [6] (b) With reference to cities you have studied, what are the problems associated with rapid urban growth in cities in LDCs? [6] Section B Answer two questions, each from a different topic. All questions carry 25 marks. [9] (b) To what extent is low-cost labour the key factor in influencing the location of TNCs? [16] OR (a) With reference to examples you have studied, discuss the impact of the New International Division of Labour (NIDL) on Developed Countries (DCs). [9] (b) To what extent do you agree that governments are effective in controlling population growth? [16] OR (a) With reference to an example, describe and explain the socio-economic differential that exists within a country.
